Education

He graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1990.

He completed clinical experience at Peterborough District Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital in the United Kingdom.

After completing his one-year compulsory service, he completed his specialty training in 1992 at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital and became a specialist in Neurosurgery (Brain and Nerve Surgery).

Between 2000 and 2005, he obtained a PhD in Advanced Neuroscience at Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences and was awarded the title of Doctor of Science (PhD) in 2005.

He participated in an autologous stem cell therapy project for spinal cord injuries at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Neurosurgery and Hematology clinics.

He continued his scientific research at Ankara University Anatomy Department and at Ankara University and Hacettepe University, focusing on complex spinal surgery development.

He received numerous national and international awards, including the Acıbadem Hospital Medical Research Award (2000), Turkish Neurosurgery Association Mahir Tevruz Scientific Research Award (2001), TÜBİTAK and Brain Research Association awards, and several others in subsequent years.

He has worked as a lecturer and speaker at more than 100 invited national and international scientific meetings and has published 65 international and 35 national scientific articles, 7 book editorships, and 52 book chapters. He has served on 5 international and 22 national organizing committees.

Professional Experience

In 1998–1999, he worked as a researcher at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine with Prof. Dr. Charles Tator on spinal cord injury and regeneration research.

After returning to Canada, he was assigned by the Ministry of Health to establish a field hospital in Şemdinli, Hakkari, and worked with the Red Crescent for two months. After this duty, he also volunteered during the 1999 Marmara Earthquake.

In 2004, he became Associate Professor of Neurosurgery.

In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Neurosurgery Clinic at Ankara Numune Hospital.

Until 2010, he managed complex cranial, spinal, pediatric, trauma, and vascular neurosurgical operations at this hospital.

In 2010, he moved to Cyprus under the leadership of Hacettepe University to help establish the Near East University Faculty of Medicine Hospital and was appointed Professor.

Between 2010–2015, he served as Head of Department at the Near East University and Deputy Chief Physician at the University Teaching and Research Hospital in Northern Cyprus.

He has served in editorial roles for Turkish Neurosurgery journals (2000–2006), chaired the Young Neurosurgeons Committee (2002–2003), and held multiple leadership positions in spinal and peripheral nerve surgery groups within the Turkish Neurosurgery Association, eventually becoming chairman in 2015.

In 2015, he was appointed to the Department of Neurosurgery at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine and served as department head until 2018.

After retirement in 2019, he resigned from academic positions but continues clinical practice and surgical work at Istanbul Brain and Spine Center (IBOM) and in private practice.
