Stomach pain and treatment methods
What is the stomach?
The stomach is one of the most important organs of the digestive system, located in the upper left part of the abdominal cavity, between the esophagus and the duodenum. It digests food by breaking it down with enzymes and acids, turning it into a semi-liquid form, which is then sent to the small intestine for absorption. The stomach also supports digestion through muscular contractions and produces a mucous lining to protect its walls from its own digestive enzymes.
What is stomach pain?
Stomach pain is typically felt in the upper left abdomen or back, just below the ribs, either before or after meals, often on an empty stomach. It may be accompanied by a burning sensation, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact location. Stomach pain can be a symptom of conditions such as gastritis, ulcers, stomach cancer, indigestion, colitis, or gallstones. If severe pain persists for 1–2 days, medical attention should be sought. Stomach pain accompanied by diarrhea may indicate food poisoning and requires urgent medical care.

What helps relieve stomach pain?
A balanced and nutritious diet, sufficient hydration, and regular physical activity are key to alleviating stomach pain. Certain foods may also help relieve discomfort:
- Flaxseed: Rich in fiber and omega-3, flaxseed helps reduce bloating, constipation, and stomach pain.
- Ginger: Ginger tea can soothe the digestive system and alleviate stomach discomfort.
- Raw potato juice: Effective for reducing stomach pain in some cases.
- Mint: Helps relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.
- Yogurt: High in probiotics, yogurt strengthens the immune system and prevents infections that can cause stomach pain.
