Causes of liver pain

Liver pain is a common condition. Therefore, individuals experiencing liver pain usually consult a physician to determine its underlying cause. Liver pain can develop due to many different reasons and is one of the most frequently searched types of pain on the internet.

Liver pain is typically felt in the upper right side of the abdomen. Over time, this pain may radiate to the back, right shoulder, abdominal region, or even the kidney area. Persistent pain in these regions may indicate a serious liver condition.

The liver is one of the largest and most active organs in the body, performing over 500 different functions daily. Its main functions include cleansing the blood, detoxifying the body, breaking down nutrients such as proteins, and storing vitamins and minerals. The liver is also considered a gland, as it produces and secretes bile.

Acting like a conductor in metabolic processes, the liver processes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates obtained from food. Despite its heavy workload, it is a highly resilient organ.

Symptoms of liver problems

Liver problems may not be noticed immediately, as many liver diseases remain asymptomatic in early stages. Even in the absence of pain, liver health should not be assumed to be normal.

Common symptoms of liver disease include:

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Unexplained joint and muscle pain

  • Itching of the skin

  • Abdominal swelling

  • Dark urine

  • Sudden weight gain or weight loss

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

Consequences of liver dysfunction

A poorly functioning liver may lead to:

  • Weakened immune system

  • Gallstones and inflammation

  • Hormonal imbalance and PMS

  • Slowed metabolism

  • Rapid weight gain

  • Poor concentration

  • Low energy and fatigue

Causes of liver pain

Fatty liver disease may develop without obvious early symptoms. Mild pain under the right rib cage, fatigue, weakness, bloating, and swelling may not immediately be associated with liver problems.

Like many liver diseases, fatty liver often progresses silently but may eventually lead to cirrhosis or even liver cancer.

A weakened immune system is one of the main triggers of liver-related pain. When immunity decreases, the body becomes more vulnerable to disease, and the liver is directly affected.

Sudden and excessive weight gain can also contribute to liver dysfunction. Unhealthy diet and inactivity force the liver to work harder than normal, leading to overload and symptoms. Slowed metabolism is also commonly associated with liver pain.

How to relieve liver pain

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the pain. If liver pain is related to short-term issues such as poor diet or alcohol consumption, the following measures may help:

  • Drink more water

  • Avoid alcohol as much as possible

  • Avoid fatty foods

  • Maintain proper posture to reduce pressure on the liver

  • Consume the recommended daily amount of protein

  • Monitor cholesterol levels regularly

  • Engage in regular physical activity
